Rosslare Golf Course

Rosslare Club Crest

Rosslare Golf Club comprises of 30-Championship Holes. The old Rosslare course was designed by Hawtree and Taylor and opened for play in 1905, measuring 6,786 yd’s Par-72 with a standard scratch of 73 off the back tees is a true test of golf. The old course features many spectacular and memorable golf holes, not least the 469 yard 11th Par-4. My son Shane first hit a ball on a golf course on the 14th he is now making his living in the professional ranks.

Seven of the holes on the old course have been redesigned in recent years to very favourable comments from the members and visitors alike. Christy O’Connor Jnr. designed the New Nine in 1992 and a further three holes were added in the Millennium providing an excellent test of golf all year round.

Rosslare Golf Club was recognized as a venue for Championship Golf when it hosted the Irish Close Championship in 1934 and the Carroll’s Irish Professional Matchplay Tournament in 1982. It has been the venue of many other GUI events in the meantime.

The Rosslare golf couse is very popular with society golfers who are lucky enough to get a booking at Rosslare. Rosslare strand boasts a variety of excellent accommodation. When in this the sunniest part of Ireland, Rosslare is a must for any golfer. It has a magnificent clubhouse and the locals are among the friendliest you will meet anywhere.

History of Rosslare

Instituted 1905 affiliated 1908

Rosslare has a very special meaning for me. Back in 1926 J. P. Rooney wrote in The "Irish Field": "It was in 1905 that the game was introduced, and to private enterprise, its present popularity is due. Mr. James Farrell in conjunction with that well-known sportsman, Mr. M. J. O’Connor, conceived the idea of forming a proprietary club of which Mr. Charles M. Barry was the Hon. Secretary, but owing to financial troubles the life of the club was a short one, and the end came at the close of 1906"

The "Golfing Annual" 1905-6 reports "Instituted in 1905 the course of eighteen-holes stretches along the burrow, and is bounded on the east by sand dunes and on the west by wooded country. The clubhouse is only half a mile from the station.

Fortunately, for the future of the game at Rosslare, when the proprietary club came to an end, Mr. Barry continued to look after the upkeep of the course and kept it open until 1908, when the present club was formed. The founder of the club practically was Sir William Paul who was President up to his death in 1912 and he had the very active cooperation of a very able lieutenant in Mr. J. B. Pettigrew, who held the position of Hon. Secretary to 1922.

Following the preliminary meeting which was held in Wexford and of which there is, unfortunately, no record available, the first general meeting took place in Whites Hotel, Wexford. The following were elected: President, Sir William Paul, Captain, R. W. Elgee, Jun., Hon. Secretary, J. P. Pettigrew.

The work of planning the links and laying it out was entrusted to Mr. Pettigrew, who showed a thorough knowledge of the game of golf and of golf architecture, another who rendered the club splendid service in attending the links was J. J. Ennis, the grounds man. At the start, the membership consisted of 60 men and the same number of ladies.

The extension of the golf course to eighteen-holes was originally proposed in 1913 but the war and other difficulties such as tenants grazing rights held up the project and in overcoming the latter difficulty, Mr. English rendered the club great assistance"

Rosslare has always had problems with sea erosion and has fought bravely against it. It now has thirty of the finest golf holes you will find anywhere.
