Youghal Golf Course

Youghal Club Crest

Youghal Golf Club is a, 5,976 m Par 71 with a standard scratch of 72 off the back tees. The golf course is always in excellent condition, is a test for golfers of all grades and the sea breezes offer a new challenge every time you play it. My good friend Hugh Hanley holds the course record of 62 at Youghal when he shaved 5-shots off the old record.

The parkland course overlooks the medieval town of Youghal. Its height over sea level affords panoramic views Youghal bay, River Blackwater and Knockmealdown Mountains.

A visit to the 19th will explain why Youghal is known as a friendly club. Visitors from home and abroad are made welcome in new clubhouse which has magnificent lounge bar where you can enjoy drink or snack full meal soon forget any wayward shots.

Not only is Hugh a fine golfer, but he is a fine lad. Well done Hugh.

History of Youghal

Youghal Golf Club was instituted 1898 affiliated 1912

Golf can be traced back to before 1897 in Youghal when "There is no regular club in Youghal, but a course has been laid out by the residents and is free to all comers. It stretches along the sea shore on a soil eminently suitable for the game", according to the "Sportsman's Holiday Guide", 1897.

The "Irish Times" on the 22nd October, 1898, records "A meeting was held in the Town Hall, Youghal, last Thursday evening for the purpose of forming a golf club, suitable links having been found close to the railway station and overlooking Youghal Bay. In the absence of the Earl of Shannon, the chair was taken by Mr. H. F. Allen, J. P., and a committee was appointed to carry out the objects of the club. The Rt. Hon. Earl of Shannon was appointed President. His Excellency, Sir Henry Blake, Vice President, Mr. S. Sealy Allen, Hon. Secretary, and Mr. A. B. Gravey, Hon. Treasurer".

A match against Little Island is recorded in "The Irish Times" on the 21st April, 1900. It would appear the club went into decline, and revived again in 1911 and the club re-affiliated to the GUI in 1940.
