History of Mount Wolseley
Mount Wolseley recently came under new ownership under Strategic Capital & further improvements to the resort will be coming soon.
Once part of the thirty thousand Co. Carlow acres owned by the Butler dynasty, Mount Aaron, came into the possession of the Wolseley family of Staffordshire in 1725. It was the only, gentry home in the county, to have been, torched by insurgents during the 1798 Rebellion, but not before lead from the roof had been enterprisingly removed to make ammunition. Mount Wolseley House was rebuilt in 1864.
Mount Wolseley connections would touch historic events far from Irish shores. It was the ancestral home of the famous brothers Field-Marshal Viscount Garnet Wolseley, one of Britain’s most important military leaders, and Frederick York Wolseley, who pioneered mechanical sheep sheering in Australia, and in whose Birmingham factory the first British-designed car was built in 1895.
The 200-acre property was sold in 1925 to the Patrician Brothers, an Order founded in Tullow by Bishop Daniel Delaney in 1808. In 1994 Mount Wolseley was, purchased by Donal Morrissey and family, whose decision to develop a championship golf course, heralds another era of change in the approach to the twenty-first century.
