Ballymena Golf Club was founded in 1903 and reflects the maturity of a Parkland Course of its vintage. With tree lined fairways and strategically located placed to punish the golfer who makes the wrong decision with club selection.

A relatively short course by today's standards, Ballymena is a relativelyflat course where the visitor can enjoy a leisurely round of golf just outside the town and relax at the 19th and enjoy the catering facility that the club offers to visitors and members alike.

Societies and Green Fees are welcome most days (see above) and group ratesare available.

Ballymena Golf Club were Runners-Up in the Ulster North Final of the Pierce Purcell Shield at Antrim Golf Club on Sunday 20th August 2023 when they went down to Strabane Golf Club by 4-matches to 1-match.
First on the tee was Kevin McGarry with John Graham who lost their match by 1-hole against John McCallion with Michael McElwee, they were followed by Ryan Daly with Millar Eagleson who lost their match against Kevin Patterson with Ryan O’Kane by 3 and 2, next up were Matthew Gregg with Paul Curry who won their match by 1-hole against Senan Roarty with James O’Reilly, in the penultimate match Kieran McLarnon with Adam Robinson lost their match against Gary Henderson with Eamon Dudgeon by 2-holes and in the bottom match Noel Kidd with David Montgomery lost by 2 and 1 against Kevin Neeson with Mark Gillespie.  

Ballymena Golf Club won the County Championship of the J. B. Carr Diamond Trophy in 2005, when the team was, V. Greenwood, W. J. McCloy, D.Mulholland, G. Cauldwell, H. McQuillan, W. Russell, A. Gardner, S. Murray, C.Law, G. B. McCrea, C. McAuley and J. T. M. Bartley, they were captained by S.Crummey.

Ballymena Golf Club won the County Championship of the J. B. Carr Diamond Trophy in 2001, when the team was, E. Smyth, W. Russell, G. B. McCrea,V. Greenwood, W. J. McCloy, H. McQuillan, C. Law, W. Mercer, D. Adair, T.McCann, S. Murray, R. McDowell, C. Caldwell and R. McComb, they were captainedby S. Crummey.

Dermot McElroy wasselected to represent Ireland in the European Boys' Amateur Team Championshipto be held at Klassis Golf & Country Club, Turkey on Tuesday 6thto Saturday 10th July 2010. The others on the team were Liam Harnett Milltown G. C., Stephen Barry Laytown & Bettystown G. C., Kieran Lynch Skibbereen G. C. Jeff Hopkins Skerries G.C. and Chris Selfridge Moyola Park G.C., they were captained by Liam Martin.

Prior to 2001

Ballymena Golf Club won the All-Ireland Final of the Irish JuniorCup at Co. Sligo in 1994, when the team was, Michael Smyth, GaryBlack, Michael McGarry, Sean McGarry, Chris Devlin, David Small, John Jamiesonand Fred Dawson they were managed by Paul Stevenson. 

Ballymena Golf Club won the Ulster Finals of the Irish Junior Cup in 1992,when the team was, M. Getty, D. Small, M. McGarry, M. Smith and F. Dawson, theywere captained by S. Bell.

Ballymena Golf Club won the Ulster Finals of the Irish Junior Cup in 1985,when the team was, P. O'Hara, E. Campbell, C. McQuillan, D. Cameron and D.Marcus, they were captained by F. Dawson and selected by R. McKane.

Ballymena Golf Club won the Ulster Finals of the Jimmy Bruen Shield in 1993,when the team was, David Mulholland, Frank O'Boyle, Adrian Gribben, JohnArmstrong, Paddy Kearney, Geoff Stewart, Paul Stevens, David Graham, SeanMcGarry, Fredrick Dawson, Michael Casson and Allen Stewart, they were captainedby Bryan Smith.

Ballymena Golf Club won the Carlsberg Northern Ireland Inter-Club Tournamentin 1982, when the team was, Frank O'Boyle, John McAleese, Bobby McLaughlin,Vincent Greenwood, Alan Stewart and John Donnelly, they were captained by CahilMcQuillan.

Ballymena Golf Club won the the East Antrim Cup in 1974, when the team was,D. Cunning, C. McGuckian, M. D. S. Rainey, H. B. Smith, J. Arthur, G. B. McRaeand J. Vaughan.

They won the Belfast and District Cup in 1974, when the team was, M. Neeson,C. McGuckian, C. McQuillan, M. D. S. Rainey, H. B. Smith, D. Cunnings, W. Bell,S. O'Hara, J. McAleese, G. B. McCrea, D. Marcus and V. Greenwood. 

Ballymena Golf Club won the Ulster Cup in 1960, when the team was, S.Greenwood, W. G. Hamilton, W. A. Rainey, D. Marcus, J. K. Fullerton, V.Greenwood, J. A. S. Fullerton and S. S. Agnew.

Ballymena Golf Club won the All-Ireland Final of the Irish JuniorCup at Lahinch in 1947, when the team was, J. E. Lynn, W. N. Gaw, R.O. Whyte, J. F. McAllister and G. McManus.

The Ladies of Ballymena Golf Club won the ILGU "C" Team in 1980,when the team was, I. Adams, M. Fullerton, W. Simpson, A. McGuckian, M. McKane,T. Curry and N. Richardson, they were captained by M. O'Hara.

H. B. Smith won the Irish Seniors Championship in 1988.

Members who played representative golf for Country or Province;

Paul Grant represented Ireland at international Youths level in 1983 playing 2-matches and lost 2-matches accumulating 0-points. He represented Ulster as a Youth in the Interprovincial Championships in 1983 playing 4-times won 2-matches and lost 2-matches accumulating 4-points;

M. McElroy represented Ireland at Irish Boys level from 2009 to 2010 playing 17-times won 11-matches halved three and lost 3-matches accumulating 25-points;

 Chris Devlin represented Ulster in the Senior Interprovincial’s in 1998 playing 6-times won 3-matches halved two and lost 1-match accumulating 8-points;

J. A. McAleese represented Ulster in the Senior Interprovincial’s from 19675to 1976 playing 32-times won 19-matches halved three and lost 10-matches accumulating 41-points;

J. McAleese* represented Ulster as a Youth in the Interprovincial Championships from 1965 to 1966;

Dermot McElroy represented Ulster at the Boys Interprovincial Championships in 2010 playing 5-times won 4-matches and lost 1-match accumulating 8-points;  

History of Ballymena

There is a little confusion about the exact date Ballymena Golf Club wasfounded. The "Irish Golfers Guide" gives it as 1902, whereas the"Golf Annual" gives it as 1904. Nevertheless it started as anine-hole course laid out on the old racecourse at Broughshane. The land wassecured from the Rt. Hon. R. T. ONeill, M. P. the first Captain was Mr. JohnK. Currie.
