History of Moate

Instituted 1900 affiliated 1940

Golf can be traced back to 1900 at Moate. The "Irish Golfer" 23rd January, 1901, records "During the past months the Royal and Ancient game has established a firm footing in the sporting little town of Moate, Co. Westmeath. Links have been secured along a line of gravel hills adjacent to the town and no exertion has been spared by the Hon. Secretary to make them as perfect as possible. They afford quite a diversity of hazards"

The first President was Mr. C. O’Donoghue, the first Captain was H. A. S. Upton, and it had a membership of over fifty with the men paying an annual subscription of £1 and the ladies ten shillings.

It would appear the club went into decline between 1937 and 1940 when it was revived. There is a fine new clubhouse and there are now eighteen-holes.
