Castlerea Golf Course

Castlerea Club Crest

Castlerea is a mature Parkland course founded in 1905, measuring 5,692 yards Par 68 with a standard scratch of 66. Although a short course is an enjoyable experience, the river Suck comes into play on the 4th, 5th and 8th holes. There are plenty of mature trees and the strategically placed fairway bunkers and well-protected greens. The feature hole is the short 5th of less than 100 metres with the tee shot over the river. The 7th is an uphill battle with surrounding bunkers and trees protecting the green.

Castlerea Golf Club has a fine clubhouse and a warm West of Ireland welcome is extended to all visitors.

History of Castlerea

Instituted 1904 affiliated 1905
The first Captain of Castlerea was Mr. G. W. F. Kelly, with a membership of 60, including ladies. The Golfing Annual, 1907-8, reads "the new course of nine holes, varying from 80 to 420 yards, is a mile from Castlerea Station".

The Irish Field, on 21st December, 1907, records "The golfers of Roscommon have been in the wilderness for some time. Mr. T. C. Wills-Stanfort has, however, come to the rescue in a most public spirited and sporting manner and a nine-hole course has been laid out in his demesne".
It would appear the club moved again around 1916 when it located at the O’Connor Don’s demesne F. G. O’Donoghue was the Hon. Secretary from 1910 to 1916.
