Massereene Golf Course

Massereene Club Crest

Founded as a 9-hole course in 1885, Massereene Golf Club remained as such until 1961 when the services of the legendry Fred Hawtree were retained to layout the new 18-hole course after additional lands were acquired. The new course was officially opened in 1964.

The course is mainly Parkland, however when one crosses the road it becomes more like Links with the testing inward nine having a sandy subsoil mainly along the shore line of Lough Neagh.

The feature hole of the front-nine is the Par-5 551, yard Index 7 seventh, which tumbles downhill to the shoreline in the direction of Shane’s Castle. The Par-5 491, yd's 16th is a challenging dog leg played along the shores of the lake, this is followed by the Par-4 427, yd's 17th played through a tunnel of trees and the finishing hole will test the best of golfers nerve.

Visitors are always extended the warmest of welcomes at Massereene Golf Club, the clubhouse offers the golfer every comfort and Jim Smyth runs an excellent Pro shop and is available for lessons when booked in advance.

Societies are welcome and group rates are available.

History of Massereene

Instituted 1895 affiliated 1896

The "Irish Times" on the 28th August 1895, records "A new golf club to be called the Massereene Golf Club has been formed at Antrim. The course is an eighteen-hole one on the borders of Lough Neagh and ought to prove superior to most inland courses as many of the holes close to the lake resemble seaside holes. The hazards are sand bunkers and plantations. The club has been, most generously treated by Lord Massereene who has given the ground forming part of his demesne for a nominal rent. The Northern Counties Railway have arranged to stop the golfers express at Antrim".

The first President was Lord Massereene, the Captain was H. M. D. Barton, and the Hon. Secretary was L. J. Holmes.

The course was reduced to nine-holes around 1906. In 1961 additional land was purchased and F. W. Hawtree was retained as course architect and the new eighteen-holes were opened in 1964.
