Callan golf club Kilkenny

Callan golf course Kilkenny

Callan Golf Course

Callan Club Crest

Callan is a parkland course with, well placed spinney's, water features on 8-holes, and maintained to a very high standard. The Ladies Course is 5451 yd‘s with a par of 73 and SSS of 72. The Men's Course is 6,422 yd‘s from the blue tees with a SSS of 72.The Professional course record is 67 gross held by Club Pro. John O’Dwyer. The Amateur record is 66 gross held by Brian Duggan (Snr.). The 1st 6 holes especially, require accuracy off the tee, this part of the course has been in play since 1929 .The 2nd hole - par 3, 210 yd‘s varies from a 3 or 4 iron to a driver depending on conditions, a great hole! The 5th hole par 4 - 330 yd‘s, narrow fairway, spinney on right, out of bounds on left demands a well placed drive and a careful 2nd shot to a nice green well guarded by bunkers.

On the newer part of the course the 7th par4 - 450 yd‘s with water on the left is a good test for all golfers. The 8th hole, par 4 at 348 yd‘s, water left and right and a green with nice contours is an interesting hole. The 10th, par 3-140 yd‘s over water is a lovely hole. On the 11th, the stream catches many a tee shot, the carry over the water is approx. 220 yd‘s. Play short of the stream, is best advice for most golfers. The 13th, 407 yd‘s par 4 index 2 is rated the best hole by many of our members and visitors alike. Certainly it demands accuracy and good length off the tee. Having played the 14th par-3 you cross the main road to play the 15th par 5 at 511 yd‘s a wonderful golf hole!. Next the par 3, 16th from an elevated tee, to a green where pin placement can make a huge difference. The 17th is a par 5 reachable in two strokes by many, but will become a lot more difficult when spinney's grow and tend to calm the big hitters off the tee. The 18th is a good finishing hole with a fine view of the green from the Clubhouse and the added pressure of knowing you may have an audience, albeit a friendly one.

Having completed your round you are assured of a very friendly welcome in our bar and we hope you will return again.

Ladies Course Record:

Members Achievements

2005 Lady Captain Breda Ryan (10) and her Captain’s Prize winner Betty McGrath (23) qualified in the Volkswagen/Irish Independent Lady Captain’s Classic at Waterford Golf Club on Thursday 22nd September, when they returned a fine score of 36 points in this scotch foursomes format to be only 4 point off the Castlecomer pairing of Kathleen Hogan and Ann Kennelly. It was off to the National Finals at The Heritage Golf Club on Monday 3rd October where they were paired with the Mountain View pair of Nuala Cummins and Kathleen Lanigan.

Angela Downey (18) and Noelle O'Driscoll (24) won the Lancome Rose Trophy in the National Scotch Foursomes on the O'Mahoney's Point course at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club in October 6th 2002.

Captain 2001, Martin Cuddihy and his Captain's Prize winner John Norris won the National Final of the Skoda-Irish Independent County Masters at the Royal Dublin Golf Club in October 2001. They returned 44 points to clinch an All-Ireland title.

Prior to 2001:

Brian Duggan won his Presidents Prize on 20th August 2000. Brian a scratch player had 42pts. Which was 6 under and a new course record.

Angela Downey and her twin sister Anne, who achieved a remarkable double, when they both won the Lady Captain's prize in the Millennium year. Anne who played her golf at Castlecomer Golf Club won the qualifying round in the Volkswagen-Irish Independent Lady Captains Classic at Tramore in September 2000. The twins are better known for their skills on the comogie field. They are probably the best known players in the country and have 12 All-Ireland medals for Kilkenny.

History of Callan

Callan was founded in 1929 and extended to 18-holes in 1999. The present clubhouse was built in 1994.

What the Club tells us:

Our Club was formed in 1929 by a few very brave and forward thinking Gentlemen when they met in the Parish Hall on Thursday 4th April 1929. Elected that faithful night as the first Officers of the Club were Lieutenant Colonal W.M. Butler as President, G. O’Kelly-Lynch as Vice President, J.C. Landy as Captain, E.Lyng as Hon. Secretary and D. O’Dea as Hon. Treasurer. The first committee comprised W.E.Allen, M.G.Doyle, Wm. Fennelly, R.Hughes and Dr.Phelan. The Club progressed well in its first years and continued on through the 30s and 40s playing on rented land over a nine hole course.

The second phase of our history was when the decision was made to purchase the course at a special meeting on 15th September 1950 for €1,400. The conclusion of this advancement of our club happened in the late 1990’s when the Club purchased enough land to finally complete the course and make it an eighteen hole course complete with a modern Clubhouse. Since its founding in the early years of the 20th Century our Club has gone through many difficult times and closed on one occasion, but has always survived and thrived. It is a jewel in the crown of the town of Callan and is an incredible amenity to be cherished and prized by all as a fantastic amenity for the town and the wider surrounding area.
