Clane Golf Course

Clane Club Crest

Clane Golf Club is located within the grounds of Clongowes Wood School. It is, a picturesque 9-hole Parkland with mature tree lined fairways. The facilities are very basic if at all but a leisurely round of golf is assured to those who play here.

It was the home club of my dear friend Liam Murphy who died on a golfing holiday and was buried with his beloved 6-iron. Liam loved his golf and I suppose he got his wish to die on the golf course. However it was 30 years too early. Liam had the course record here for years. I trust he will set a few more in the golf course in the sky.

Members Achievements

Captain 2001, Austin Daly and his Captain's Prize winner Ian Crofton came 3rd in the National Finals of the Skoda-Irish Independent County Masters at The Royal Dublin Golf Club in October 2001. They returned 43 points to be beaten on a count-back for 2nd on the last six-holes.
Clane was the home club of my late good friend Liam Murphy, Liam was taken from us at a young age, our hope is that wherever he has gone, there is a magnificent golf course (there). He loved life and the game.

History of Clane

The Early Years – Clane Golfing Society
The first ever general meeting was held in April 1976. Among the attendance were Ted Coonan, Henry Wright, David and Ann Carbery, Mrs. Monaghan and Eamonn Howlin. Father Ray Lawlor through the auspices of Ted Coonan, was instrumental in getting the College Authorities to grant permission for the golf course to be used by the residents of Clane and thus was founded Clane Golfing Society.
The first Captain elected was Eamonn Howlin, who held the post for 1976, 1977 & 1979 & again in 1998 and Austin Nevin from Prosperous was Captain in the intervening year. The first Captain’s Prize of Clane Golfing Society was held in 1977, and was won by John Molloy with Fr Edward Flood runner-up.
