Mountbellew Golf Course

Mountbellew Club Crest

Mountbellew have recently opened an extra nine holes with Ken Kearney giving the whole Course a new design.

Founded in 1929, Mountbellew is a mature tree lined parkland course, with generous fairways and greens that are always in good condition.

Measuring 6,088 yards with a par of 71 and a standard scratch of 70, Mountbellew may appear easy but when one plays it is a different story as can be seen from the course record of 68. The quarry comes into play on the 7th and 9th holes, requiring precision off the tee to well protected greens.

The clubhouse has a buzzing atmosphere and visitors are always made feel very welcome. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

History of Mountbellew

Instituted 1906 affiliated 1930

The first record of golf at Mountbellew appears in the "Irish Field" on 10th November, 1906, which reported: "A meeting of the above club was held in Mannion's Hotel during the week. President Sir Henry Grattan Bellew, Vice President, Lord De Rythyn, Captain, Mr. Nernon. A vote of thanks was passed to Sir Henry Grattan Bellew for giving use of the Deer Park grounds for the golf course". It would seem this club didn’t last after 1910.

The present club at Mountbellew was founded in 1929, the land was rented from Col. Bellew at £18 per annum. The founder members were Dr. Matt Crowe, Ned Donoghue, Micky Gilmore, James Haverty, Maurice Hegarty, Fr. Matt Loftus, the Naughton family, Nellie Mannion, and the staff of the Bank of Ireland.
