Dunmore Demesne Golf Course

Dunmore Demesne Club Crest

This Eddie Hackett designed 9-hole course, measuring 5,278 metres and a standard scratch of 68, opened for play in 1998. Set in mature parklands with mature trees and water coming into play, Dunmore Demesne may be a short course, but it is difficult and rewards accuracy. It is the only course I know of with the local GAA pitch in the middle of it, which shows once again the closeness between our national games and golf.

Indeed as an ex-hurler and footballer I, like many others took to golf after my playing days. However I am concerned about where our hurlers of the future are going to come from, as I know many of our top amateur golfers and professional players cut their teeth on the GAA pitch. Maybe Dunmore Demesne have the answer: the young men and girls can play their game of golf and then tog out on the GAA pitch!

History of Dunmore Demesne

Founded 1988

Dunmore Golf Club originated from a very successful Golf Society set up in 1988, when there were only 12 golfers in the Dunmore Parish. Ballyhaunis Golf Club was then their home club and they assisted them in providing playing facilities for the Golf Society, which grew to over 100 members. The origins of golf in Dunmore go back to the 70s when a festival day called "Fahy Day" was run to encourage new golfers to participate in golf. This festival day has grown to 240 members playing in the year 2000 in a scramble format.

The first reference to golf in Dunmore refers to a course in Quarter during the 1920's. The course there was described as a tough test over hilly and sandy ground. Despite the fact that over the years Dunmore produced many fine golfers most of whom were members of Ballyhaunis GC there was no organised golf in Dunmore until the lat 70's. The festival had been running for a number of years when a group of golfers decided to organise a fun day in Ballyhaunis. The year was 1978 and it was sponsored by the late Conor Fahy. The day became a huge success and the prizes were coveted by all. It was not unusual to have close to 250 golfer taking part. The original format was singles, often a fourball played out of one bag but that didn't lessen the fun. Tommy Keenan was in charge of handicap allocation  Eventually a scramble was introduced and this proved equally if not more of a draw. In 1988 Dunmore Golfing Society was formed and this introduced many golfers to organised golf. The Society played throughout Connacht and went on tours to Waterford and Donegal. Eventually the Golf Club evolved from the society.
