Stackstown Club Crest

The home club of Padraig Harrington (Open Champion at Carnoustie 2007 when he beat Sergio Garcia in a pulsating play-off over 4-holes, having picked up 6-shots on the Spaniard in the final round. Padraig became only the second Irish man to win a Major in the history of the wonderful game and we look forward to him winning several more in the years to come. Well done Padraig.)

Padraig Harrington wins the US-Seniors Open at Saucon Valley Golf Club on 26th June 2022. He held of none other than Steve Stricker to win by 1-shot. This was Padraig's first win on the Seniors and we look forword to seeing him win many more in his future golfing life.

Padraig achieved what I believed he had the capability of doing, when he won The Open Championship again at Royal Birkdale in 2008, to join an illustrious group of golfers to retain The Open Championship. Tiger Woods 2006, 2005, Tom Watson, 1983, 1982, Lee Trevino, 1972, 1971, Arnold Palmer, 1962, 1961, Peter Thomson, 1956, 1955, 1954, Walter Hagan, Bobby Jones, 1927, 1926, J. Braid, 1906, 1905, Harry Vardon, and others before the Open Championship became a competitive event. Padraig added the US-PGA at Oakland Hills Country Club in August 2008 to add yet another Major to his remarkable achievements in the wonderful game and we look forward to Padraig adding other Major’s in years to come. I would argue that his achievements to date make him the Greatest Irish Sportsman ever.

Stackstown was opened in 1975 and indeed Padraig's late father Paddy was one of the founder members. Indeed I can remember the original members picking stones of the fairways on the side of the Dublin Mountains. At the time all of the members were members of the Garda and somehow they managed to develop one of the most challenging and testing golf courses in the country. The original layout was very hilly, however in recent years improvements have made the course a more pleasurable course to play. Before the improvements I remember meeting my brother Paul in the bar, who is a member after my game of golf and saying to him "I don't know about you "Brud" but I'm too old for this place" he's about seven years my senior and of course I was after having one of those games when everything was a struggle.

Stackstown opens up with one of the most challenging holes in golf with out of bounds all the way up the right-hand-side and everything breaking left into trouble. Most holes at Stackstown are a challenge and require careful club selection and course management the 10th is a tough uphill Par 3 and the finishing hole with water coming into play although a Par 5 is always dangerous.

Stackstown has a proud tradition of developing young golfers and are producing some of the finest to be found in the country, the likes of Mark Campbell, the McDermott brothers Michael & John have all won major honours. Indeed Padraig's achievements on the world stage must surely be a great inspiration to these young men.

Stackstown has an imposing clubhouse with stunning views of the surrounding countryside with the Dublin Mountains above and Dublin City below. The view of the city at night is breathtaking. The visitor to Stackstown will find a very warm welcome and a memorable days golf and will have no doubt in their minds how Padraig Harrington developed into one of the Top golfers in the world.

They were led out by Anne O'Connor with Jean Constant who had 5 and 4 win over Derval Molloy with Margaret Tighe, next on the tee was Veronica Clarke with Rebecca Rush who went down by 6 and 4 to Ann Gallagher with Marian Martyn, in the bottom match Avila Mairtin with Joan Moore lost their match 5 and 4 to Breda Gilvar.ry with Regina Kerr

They were followed by Barbara Kelly with Jean Constant who beat Carmel Horgan with Teresa O'Toole by 2 and 1. Next on the tee was Mary Horn with Michelle Murphy who had one-of-those-days when going down to Martina Tancred with Patricia Daly by 6 and 4. The bottom match of Anne O'Connor with Alice Shaughnessy-Hynes was halved with Susan Byrne with Rosemary Redmond, but this was enough to secure their passage to the All-Ireland deciders at Mullingar Golf Club on 19th September.

They were drawn against Western Champions Portumna Golf Club in the All-Ireland Semi-Final and once again they were led by Avila Martin (12) with Mairead Cronin who lost out to Suzanne Corcoran (4) with Mary Madden (24) by 6 and 5. Stackstown Golf Club won the 10th All-Ireland J. B. Carr Diamond Trophy at the picturesque Woodenbridge Golf Club on Sunday 18th September 2005 when they beat Galway Golf Club in the final by 4-matches to 1, making it a disastrous week for the Galway club and county.

Galway having lost the All-Ireland Hurling final to Cork the previous Sunday, they sent three teams to the Bulmers Cups & Shields to Rosslare Golf Club having won the Connacht Finals in the Barton Shield, Senior Cup and Junior cup, who sadly failed to collect yet another green pennant to their very large collection of national championships.

The Stackstown team beat Munster Champions Nenagh Golf Club by 3½ matches to 1½ in the Semi-Final and met Galway in the All-Ireland Final in this very prestigious championship, with over 180 clubs participating, restricted to players over 60.

The Stackstown team was lead by Pat Malone & Tony O’Mahoney who won their match against Joe Corless & Bill Burke on the 18th, next up was John Kavanagh & Sean O’Dwyer against Bosco McDermott (he of he Galway 3-in-a-row 60’ team) & Mick Dunne who won their match on the first play-off hole. They were followed by Tom O’Donohue & John Mahony who halved with Sean Hosty (Sean was Secretary of the Connacht GUI for many years) & Tom Ford, next on the tee were Pat McNiallais & Patsy O’Connor against Michael O’Hagan & Des Feely who finished their match on the 18th. The anchor team was Frank Kavanagh & Tom Kiely against Denis McSweeney & Tom Feeney. Hence Stackstown recorded a 4 and 1 victory to add another green pennant to their growing collection.

Mark Campbell was selected on the Leinster team for the Interprovincial Matches played at Portmarnock Golf Club from 11th to 13th August 2004. Mark was selected to play in the Home Internationals at Prestwick Golf Club from 8th to 10th September 2004.

Congratulations to Seamus Doherty (9), who teamed up with Julie Walsh (20) Boystown in the Irish Final of the Spar-Irish Independent Mixed Pairs Challenge at Adare Manor Golf & Country Club. They finished 3rd on a count-back with 54 points on the 25th of August 2001. However, it was good enough to book their tickets for Tenerife in November for the big Shoot out. Where they finished second with a score of 151.
