Hazel Grove Golf Course

Hazel Grove Club Crest

Hazel Grove was founded in 1988, when P. J. Foley asked Watty Sullivan the resident professional at Grange Golf Club to design this 9-hole Parkland on the foothills of the Dublin Mountains.

Watty was a legend in his, own time, with a reputation of being one of the best coaches in Irish golf. When I first brought Shane to Watty for a lesson and an assessment it was one of the most amusing hours I've ever spent on a golf course. I don't know what Shane learned but I learned a lot just listening to this gentleman of golf. I've had the pleasure of meeting him several times after that and all as one could do is listen his stories were true and amusing.

Hazel Grove almost within the village of Tallaght is one of the most friendliest golf clubs to be found in Ireland and the visitor is extended a warm and genuine welcome at Hazel Grove.

Members Achievements

It was on to Donabate Golf Club to compete in the National deciders and were drawn against Connacht Champions Portumna Golf Club in the All-Ireland quarter-final. First on the tee wasFrances Mayberry (23) who lost her match by 2 and 1 to Mary McDonagh (23), she was followed by Michelle Masterson (24) who suffered a 7 and 5 lose to Mary Kelly (26), next up was Phyllis Noctor (24) against Loretto O'Grady (27) this match was called-in. The penultimate match of Mirium Walsh (27) against Mary McElroy (28) also went to the ladies from east Galway by 6 and 5, the bottom match of Evelyn Daly (27) against Audrey McGrath (28) was also called in. They may not have progressed to challenge for the green pennant but it was some achievement for a club with a lady membership of less than 40.

As predicted Martin Hynes continues to produce good young golfers at Hazel Grove, Martin did it at Stackstown with not only Padraig Harrington but also top Armatures of the calibre of Mark Campbell and John McDermott. Now he has had another win in the Leinster Under-15 inter-club trophy in 2204, with Darragh Joyce, Nils Conway, Moss Landman, Andrew Healy, Shaun Dunne and Simon McGirr.

The young men of Hazel Grove won the Tile Style Trophy in Stackstown Golf Club in 2004, when the team was, Thomas Geraghty, Moss Landman, Andrew Healy, they were captained by Darragh Joyce, and managed by Martin Hynes.

They were Leinster Champions in the Under-15 Inter Club Championship in 2003.

Bridget McMillan won the ILGU Bronze Medal Final at the Curragh Golf Club on the 28th of May 2001. Bridget playing off 25 returned a score of 64 to win by four shots .

Prior to 2001:

I was delighted to see the under-15s reach the finals of the inter-clubs at Hollystown Golf Club in November 2000, where they went down to the Island. The team was Sean Kearns, Kevin Leavy, Craig Scanlon, Donal O'Hagan and Brian Charters.

Full credit must be given to my old friend Martin Hynes, who is now coaching the youth in Hazel Grove Martin played a major part in Padraig Harrington's devilment when coaching at Stackstown, and in Mark Campbell's and Michael McDermott's the best of which we have yet to see. Watch this space, it should be interesting to watch the progress of the young crop at Hazel grove.

Hazel Grove won the Best Cup in 1999, when the team was, Joe Burke, Larry Conway, Billy Conway, Vincent Dempsey, Gerry Dolan, Roy Douglas, Eddie Duff, Denis Heartherington, Larry Hickey, Brian Kelly, John Kelly, Robert Lambert, Brian Lawless, Bob Mansfield, John Martin, Paul Martin, Paul O'Farrell, Thompson, Eddie Tyrrell, Derek Walsh and Des Wilkes, they were managed by Eugean Dunne.

History of Hazel Grove

Founded 1988 affiliated 1988

What the Club tells us: Hazel Grove Golf Club was founded in 1913, its modest first site being some rented farmer's fields at Bosden, Hazel Grove. Following a short tenancy, the members found on alternative site at Mill Hill in Hazel Grove and twelve months later another move was made, this time to the present course at High Lane. It was then that the club started to establish itself and the membership grew accordingly.

The early 1920's was a significant time in the club's history as finances were raised and the club embarked on the improvement and preconstruction of the course by none other than Mackenzie & Nicholson Golf Course Contractors. As history shows, Dr. Mackenzie, pictured here, proved to be one of the great golf course architects of our time and is responsible for designing many world famous courses, including Augusta National and Cypress Point. Hazel Grove is indeed in very good company!

The next major work to be carried out on the course took place in 1990 when plans for the infamous A6 Bypass resulted in the compulsory purchase of a section of the old course which to this day remains unused. However, this land continues to be maintained by the greens staff as if it were still part of the course and makes an excellent practice area.

New land was acquired and the course redesigned along with a complete refurbishment of the clubhouse and its facilities.

However the greatest feature of the new course is probably the greens, having all been relaid to USGA standards. Not only does the club arguably possess the best greens in the region, but members and guests can also enjoy playing on them for twelve months of the year without a temporary green in sight.
