On Saturday 1st March 2014 club officials, members and invited guests celebrated the official name change of Downpatrick Golf Club to St. Patrick’s Golf Club, Downpatrick. This marked a new era in our history.

Originally a 9-hole Parkland course Downpatrick upgraded to an 18-hole Championship Golf Course in the 1990's. Martin Hawtree undertook the design of this course that has been in existences since 1930. Course now measures 5,955 yards with a Par of 70 and standard scratch of 69 off the white stakes. The ladies course is slightly shorter at 5,438 with a Par 72 and an SSS to match.

St. Patrick's signature hole is the 5th playing all of 457 yards requiring a long to medium iron for your second shot, over club here and you are in the water to the back of the green. Water comes into play again ton the 155 yard 8th and 337 yards 9th. With undulating fairways, strategically located bunkers and quick but true greens all combine to make St. Patrick's a challenging but fair course for golfers of all abilities. The course has spectacular views of Strangford Lough, the Isle-of-Man on a clear day and the surrounding lands of majestic Co. Down.

The visitor is always extended a warm Ulster hand of welcome and the facilities are next to none.

History of St. Patrick's

Founded 1930, affiliated 1933.

On Saturday 1st March 2014 club officials, members and invited guests celebrated the official name change of Downpatrick Golf Club to St. Patrick’s Golf Club, Downpatrick. This marked a new era in our history.

Downpatrick’s Golf Club had its official beginning in an advertisement for a public meeting, which appeared in the DOWN RECORDER on the 12th October 1929. All four signatories to the notice played one way or another, significant roles in the Club’s formation and collectively must stand as the ‘Founding Fathers’.

Not long after the Public Meeting the formation of the Club proceeded at a phenomenal speed. On Friday 29th November 1929, the first General Meeting took place. Without as yet a blade of grass to play upon, the Club could boast a municipal membership of 225. The Steering Committee had disposed of the notion of seeking a municipal course and had decided to go for their own Club.

At the General Meeting the first Council in Downpatrick Golf Club’s history was formed:

  • John Acton Esq., Circular Road, Downpatrick
  • John McCauley Esq., Irish Street, Downpatrick
  • M.J. Johnston Esq., Circular Road, Downpatrick
  • R.D. Perceval Esq., Kary Hill, Downpatrick
  • G.A. Crickard Esq., English Street, Downpatrick
  • J. Murray Esq., M.D., Irish Street, Downpatrick
  • E.K. McGrady, Esq., J.P., John Street, Downpatrick
  • W. Smyth Esq., Saul, Downpatrick
  • T. Wright Esq., Northern Bank, Downpatrick – Hon. Treasurer
  • Captain J. McMechan, Belfast Bank, Downpatrick
  • Captain C. Heron, Tullyverry House, Killyleagh
  • J. McMeekan Esq., Circular Road, Downpatrick – Hon Secretary

The first few Council meetings were held in the Northern Bank. At the Council Meeting in January 1930, Mr. J. McMeekan was appointed Hon, Secretary and Mr. Wright was appointed Hon. Treasurer. At the same meeting it was agreed to purchase an army hut for £30 and Mr. T. McLean was invited to prepare plans for the conversion of this hut into a Clubhouse. The siting of the Clubhouse was to be left in the hands of the Hon. Secretary, Mr. T McLean and Mr. R.H. Patterson, Surveyor.
